U.S. Census 2010

smcensusNCBW, LI encourages its members, partners, friends and neighbors to participate in the 2010 U.S. Census. The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution and is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years. We will partner with the U.S. Census bureau and promote participation in the 2010 Census at our meetings and public events.

  • The 2010 U.S. Census form takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
  • Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census.
  • Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.
  • Federal Law requires your participation in the U.S. Census.

The ACT Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI)

iknow_aidsThe Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has launched a multi-million dollar, five-year partnership with 14 of the nation's leading African-American organizations including the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. "The Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative."

The Long Island Chapter is proud to be a grant recipient and a local agent for the initiative.

“The Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative” (AAALI) seeks to harness the collective strength and reach of traditional, longstanding African-American institutions to increase HIV-related awareness, knowledge, and action within black communities across the United States.

According to a 2009 CDC report African-Americans face the most severe rates of HIV and AIDS in the nation. While blacks make up just 12 percent of the U.S. population, they represent nearly half of the 56,000 new HIV infections that occur each year, and half of the more than 14,000 AIDS deaths each year.  The HIV incidence rate for Black women is nearly 15 times as high as that of White women, and nearly four times that of Hispanic women.

Project Goal: To encourage self-protective behaviors among Long Islanders of African descent through (1) education on HIV/AIDS prevention; (2) referrals for testing counseling and treatment. (3) Implementation of out reach efforts and engagement of public policy decision makers on appropriate funding.
